Decades ago, it could be quite a stressful and involved process for passengers arriving at the cruise port to begin their journey on a cruise. I remember showing up at the arrival hall with my family when I was a child and seeing the mass of people trying to board the ship. Overwhelming is the best word to describe the scene with all the lines that seemed to slowly move along. The great news is that this process is more streamlined and more efficient nowadays, majorly in part to the Online Check-In Process with the cruise lines.

All major cruise lines now encourage passengers to complete the numerous steps weeks, if not months, in advance of sailing to speed up the process for guests when they arrive at the cruise port. The online procedures tend to be self-explanatory, but I’d like to share some of the main Cruise Line processes to give an overview of what to expect.

CARNIVAL:

  1. Go to https://www.carnival.com/BookedGuest/.
  2. Login to your Carnival account or create an account if you have not done so already. You will need to provide your Carnival booking number, guest last name, date of birth, ship name and sail date.
  3. From the ‘To Do List’, select 'Online Check-In' and complete the following necessary information: Guest Information, Travel Documentation, Travel Plans, Arrival Appointment, Onboard Expense Account, Cruise Preferences and finally accept the Cruise Ticket Contract.
  4. The registration process can be done within 90 days of the departure and no later than midnight (eastern time) prior to the sailing date. if you do not complete the Online Check-in prior to this time, it may result in delays at embarkation.
  5. Once the check-in process has been completed, a boarding pass can be printed for each guest to bring to the cruise terminal along with their electronic cruise document.

NCL:

  1. Go to https://www.ncl.com/oci.
  2. Type in or select the required information as follows:
    1. Reservation # - this is your cruise confirmation number which will be listed on your NCL Cruise Confirmation
    2. Ship Name
    3. Sail date (you have to click on the calendar and select the appropriate date)
    4. First Name
    5. Last Name
  3. Click on each orange drop down arrow and complete the fields shown. You need to click on each field and either type in the required information or select it from the drop downs. Afterwards, click Save and Continue (if you didn’t complete each field, then it will give you an error and you need to go back to make sure everything is filled in, then hit Save and Continue again).
  4. Once you click Save and Continue, it will bring up the next Step and you need to complete each field then click Save and Continue after entering all the information
  5. Breakdown of the Steps:
    1. Personal Information – verify your birth date is correct and add in the missing fields
    2. Contact Information – each required field has a red asterisk
    3. Proof of Citizenship – this is where you enter your passport/document information. If you don’t yet have your passport/required documentation, you can skip this step by clicking on Step 5 of 8 (Arrival Time)
    4. Arrival Time – nothing needs to be done here (click on step 6 of 8 to continue)
    5. Vacation Add Ons –
      1. Those who purchased travel insurance to cover your full trip, you do not need the basic travel insurance offered by NCL because you are already fully covered. If you did not purchase the full travel insurance, you are welcome to review this option through NCL and mark the boxes if you would like to purchase it. Just be aware that it will not cover the flights, the hotel, and the coverages for medical issues are lower than through Allianz
      2. You can choose whether or not to add on any of the upgrades or other options. Click No Thanks at the bottom of this section or Save and Continue.
    6. Onboard Payment Preferences – you need to enter credit card information for purchases you may make onboard and there’s a box to check where you can use the same payment method for the other traveler in the cabin or that person can log in separately and add their own payment method
    7. Ticket Contract – you can scroll through the contract to review it. Then, you need to click the box saying you agree to the contract and click Finish Check-In at the bottom of the screen. (You don’t necessarily need to print out the contract, but you are welcome to if you feel more comfortable.)
  6. You then can go back to the login screen (www.ncl.com/oci) to complete the same steps for the other travelers in the cabin.
